Six manufacturers and 12 teams
There are 12 teams registered for MotoGP this season, with three new ones compared to last year. First, the return to the status of independent team of Gresini Racing, which no longer operates in partnership with Aprilia; the registration of VR46 as a team in its own right, after a first transition season lived in collaboration with Avintia; and the creation of the RNF team, born from the ashes of SRT.
The six manufacturers involved do not change and all have factory equipment (Suzuki, KTM, Ducati, Yamaha, Honda and Aprilia), but four of them also provide one or two satellite equipment. Ducati remains the most represented brand and has even gone from six to eight machines this season, accounting for only a third of the grid.
Four exits and one return
If the number of riders registered in the category thus increases to 24, finally there are few changes in the field of MotoGP compared to the 2021 season. Only one rider already admitted last year changes team, in this case Enea Bastianini who joins the Gresini team. In addition, there are three more transfers that had already begun during last year’s season, in this case the return of Andrea Dovizioso through the RNF team (which previously made him run under the banner of SRT ), the transfer of Maverick Viñales to Aprilia and the promotion of Franco Morbidelli to the official Yamaha team.
Among last season’s riders are four outings: Lorenzo Savadori, who didn’t finish last season, Danilo Petrucci, who left for MotoAmerica, Iker Lecuona, now a WorldSBK rider, and, of course, Valentino Rossi, who he withdrew from the motorcycle. race and now discovers endurance racing.
In addition, five pilots are registered as novices. Four of them have been promoted to the Moto2 category: Remy Gardner, Raúl Fernández and Marco Bezzecchi who last year formed the top three in the intermediate category, and Fabio Di Giannantonio, seventh in the championship. Darryn Binder, meanwhile, made the leap by going straight from Moto3 to MotoGP.
They are between 21 and 24 years old and realize a dream integrating the royal category of motorcycle racing. They will all try to follow in the footsteps of their most illustrious predecessors, starting with Jorge Martín who, last year, managed to win his first pole positions and even a first victory (out of a total of four podiums) since the year of his debut. among the elite. Brad Binder was even ahead as in 2020 he signed his first win in his third test in the category!
If they want to do better, they will have to reach the highest precocity records. Thus, we can cite Johann Zarco, the only rider who has completed laps at the top of his first MotoGP Grand Prix (in Qatar in 2017) since the creation of the current category in 2002. None has managed to win his first race from that date. (the last one was Max Biaggi in 1998, in 500cc, therefore), but there are those who get on the podium immediately: Marc Márquez was third in 2013, Dani Pedrosa had finished second in 2006, the same that Jorge Lorenzo on his debut in 2008. As for Fabio Quartararo, in 2019, he impressed by marking the fastest lap of the race of his first Grand Prix, which he had raced in his stomach after losing the start.
Lorenzo also stands out for being the only one to reach pole position in his first MotoGP classification, precisely in Losail, in 2008. That same year, he was even a double of debutants on the starting grid, already that James Toseland had placed second. , but the feat is no less rare.
All MotoGP riders
It should be noted that to these registrations can be added those of pilots hired as wild-cards. Last manufacturer to benefit from the concessions of the regulations, Aprilia can present six in the entire championship, the other brands are limited to three.
They dominate Spain and Italy
Now it is common, Spain and Italy are the best represented countries in chess with nine riders respectively for one and seven for the other. France still has two representatives thanks to Fabio Quartararo and Johann Zarco, such as South Africa and Australia. Portugal and Japan have only one.
From 21 to 35 years
Despite the departure of veteran Valentino Rossi, the average age has barely dropped from 26.4 to 26.2 this season. Only five riders are thirty years old: Takaaki Nakagami (30), Pol Espargaró (30), Johann Zarco (31), Aleix Espargaró (32) and the new veteran, Andrea Dovizioso (35). Raúl Fernández is the youngest driver in the championship at 21 years old.
Fourteen World Champions
The MotoGP line-up this year has 14 riders already crowned Grand Prix World Champions, two more than the record set last year as well as 2015, 2018 and 2020. But with the departure of Rossi, the titles accumulated by these pilots in the total of the three categories drops from 30 to 24.
In addition, 12 drivers have already won races in the queen category and there are 23 in total who have already won at least one race in one or another of the championship categories … now only Aleix Espargaró is missing in this small group. !
