USA Carcassonne – Mathieu Cidre: “Aiming at our highest level of performance”

Arriving at US Carcassonne at Fédérale 1 in 2009 as a player, Mathieu Cidre has been the coach of the strikers of this team in Pro D2 since March 2016. Two weeks after resuming training, he takes stock of summer preparation.

What conclusions do you draw from these first two weeks of training?

It is a positive assessment in the sense that all players, necessarily old and especially new, join very quickly and respond present both on the mood and on the physical requirements. The tests done on recovery are very good in general, as well as the quality of the work they do, the quality of listening and above all the execution. There is a very good mood. We ended the week on Friday with a beach rugby in Valras. The environment is good.

So is there only positive?

The downside is that not everyone has arrived yet and that we are going to attack the third week with, in particular, two days of cohesion training. And unfortunately, not all players will have participated in the same efforts as the others. So far, Mavinga, Harley, Sa, Onambélé, Méka, Aguillon and Désert are missing. When it comes to cohesion, even if there are things that make us think it will go well, then we don’t have too much time to work on either. And if there is one lever that we will activate immediately before we want to be perfect in terms of the game, it is to be strong in the fundamentals but above all in the mood and collective commitment that we will put into it.

“It was our desire to start a game away from home”

What is your opinion on the newly published calendar?

As for the sports issue, but also for a question of availability of the Sunday currently under construction, in any case, it was a desire on our part to start a game away from home. Then today it is difficult to identify one team more or less easy than the others. But considering the teams we will play in a rich first block (Colomiers, Montauban, Béziers, Vannes and Biarritz, editor’s note), like many teams that aim for the top of the table, this will allow us to come back strong in terms of the championship and know where we are. We will quickly have to get to the heart of the matter.

19 departures, 17 arrivals, the US Carcassonne have experienced an end of cycle?

That yes, in the sense that the players who had been there for a while, who had taken over the project and had worked for the club, either resigned or also left legitimately. For some it is the Top 14, for others because they have given a lot and it is time to take over, to pass to the little ones. So, inevitably, it is a transition and also a challenge that motivates us. And it’s not easy, because in a very short time you have to rebuild something strong. This is our first job, a relationship based on trust, that the players adhere to the environment, the operation and the DNA of the club, that they manage to find references very quickly in our game.

“Jordan Puletua’s return will take longer than expected”

And yet, you have ambitions …

We know what awaits us. We’ve lost quality players, caught quality players, even some added value, but the most important thing will be to develop them well together so that they play well together, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting to be ambitious. Even if there is rotation. It is necessary to generate enthusiasm and impetus. Newcomers also need to be greedy for a good season. Then, we must not forget that there are also important boys who remain. We will trust them a lot. So, yes there is work, but that doesn’t stop us from being ambitious. A ravine at home is one of the club’s goals. So, do we fix it at N + 1, N + 2 to reach maturity with this team we are rebuilding? For our part, we will do our best to achieve our highest level of performance.

What about the desired additional reinforcements?

For the position of prostitute and second line, we will give ourselves time … although I know that in the long run, during the season, a dense player will be needed in five. It should also be possible to prioritize, and as for the amount today we are missing a three-quarter center because Jordan Puletua is injured and his return will take a little longer than expected. At first there is guidance on taking a medical prankster in this position, then we will let you know if we extend it as an additional player.
