The FIA is taking safety measures against porpoise

On the occasion of the Canadian Grand Prix, the FIA has launched a technical directive to help teams regulate porpoise and preserve the health of riders. This is what we know.

the marsopa it is the most apparent phenomenon New generation Formula 1. Before the start of the 2022 season, it was expected that the team that would better manage this disruptive effect would stand out from the rest of the field. The reality is very different. After 8 rounds, the teams find no radical solutions.

On the occasion of the last Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, the porpoise appeared en masse on the start-finish line of more than 2 km. At the end of the 51 laps, the riders looked tired or even broken, as shown Lewis Hamilton on leaving his car after receiving shocks of almost 10 G.

The constant high-speed rebound effect subdues the pilots significant vertical forces, to which they are not accustomed and prepared to endure. After numerous complaints, the FIA decided to react by establishing a technical directive for safety reasons :

“After the 8the test of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship this season in which the phenomenon of aerodynamic oscillations (porpoise) of the new generation of Formula 1 cars, and its effect during and after the race on the physical condition of the drivers, has become visible again, the FIA, as the governing body of sport, has decided that , in the interests of security, action is needed to require teams to make the necessary adjustments to reduce or eliminate this phenomenon. »

This weekend, at Canadathe FIA has therefore measures implemented to help teams understand and counter the porpoise. Here they are :

  1. A more detailed examination of the floor, both from the point of view of its design and the wear and tear observed.
  2. The definition of a value, based on the vertical acceleration of the car, which will give a quantitative limit to the acceptable level of vertical oscillations. The FIA is still analyzing the exact mathematical formula for this measure and Formula 1 teams have been asked to help with this process.

During the 3rd free training sessionall pilots will be carried during 3 laps to roll at a constant speed on the different lines of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. The FIA will take all cars as a point of comparison set a possible height limit to the detriment of performance, with the aim of preserving the health of the pilots.

These measurements take place in a short-term process. Pending further decisions, the FIA will convene the teams for a technical meeting to consider other solutions in the medium term. However, in the long run, Christian Horner (CEO of Red Bull) i Toto Wolff (CEO of Mercedes) for once they have accepted, admitting that the porpoise will be difficult to regulate.
