After 4 years of racing, the DS 7 is emancipated by its restyling. It abandons its Crossback name and receives a 360 hp sports variant, with specific configurations. Discovery.
Introduced in 2017 and launched in 2018, the DS 7 Crossback was the first model 100% developed by and for DS, after its separation from Citroën. However, it is the latest to go through the restyling box of the Stellantis group, after the Citroën C5 Aircross, although more recent. First contact in the studio.
One of the significant changes is, first of all, its name! The SUV loses its Crossback particle, synonymous with high and adventurous model, to become DS 7 and approach DS 4 or DS 9. The DS 3 Crossback, soon remodeled, will suffer the same fate. On the outside, the front face has been redesigned with an expanded ventilation grille at the bottom, the disappearance of fog lights and a revised gray protective shoe. The grille widens and its pattern changes. It is no longer framed by “DS Wings” full chrome. this material is gradually being banned. This time, there’s just a little under the slender headlights and at the bottom of the grille.
This leaves room for new DS Light Veil daytime running lights. Inspired by the 2020 Aero Sport Lounge concept and the DS 4, they consist of a vertical daytime running light and four light lines. The polycarbonate plate is painted on the reverse only after it is laser engraved to remove material and let light through, thanks to the 33 LEDs on each side. This technology is possible thanks to Flex-N-Gate, a partner based in Doubs.
In profile, no visible change apart from new 19 or 21 inch tires. At the rear, the lights are perfected and enlarged, but retain their 3D scale pattern. They are a bit more vivid thanks to laser technology and the black background of the optics. They are still connected by a tiara, now black on all finishes. It no longer shows the name Crossback but DS Automobiles in full. On the back door, the most observant will also notice additional lines: one above the slab for the plate, which is almost the entire width; the other two between the lights and the bezel, which extend the latter converging towards the logo.
Interior: minor changes
The cabin evolves in small details: the leather strap “watch strap” receives for the first time a light pearl gray color, and new inserts with a draped effect on the control panel and door trims evoke daytime running lights. The materials are still very refined: Nappa leather, Alcantara, white, gold or carmine red seams “Clous de Paris” … The 12-inch digital counters have new graphics, while the 12-inch touch screen in the center of the board is reworked. with extended cartography. It gives the feel of a bigger screen, even though it’s the same.
The personal assistant Iris, from the DS 4, allows you to control the multimedia system by voice. On the other hand, no touchpad as in the latter. The “big” Cobra shift lever is also maintained, while many models in the group including the DS 4, Peugeot 208 and 2008 have already received the small aluminum selector. An amazing choice, which the brand explains by the fact that it would have been necessary to redesign the entire dashboard and that customers are already convinced by this ergonomic lever.
A new plug-in hybrid sports 360 hp
The DS 7 abandons its 180 hp PureTech petrol unit, which leaves a big difference between the 130 hp diesel that remains in the catalog and the plug-in hybrids of 225 and 300 hp, already present before the restyling. In other markets, outside of Europe, the DS 7 will, however, offer PureTech petrol units of 130, 215 and 225 hp. In fact, DS relies on France for its PHEV engines, which accounted for 50% of SUV sales in 2022. Thus, the manufacturer has reviewed the chemistry of its battery, which increases to 14.2 kWh and offers up to 81 km of autonomy (mixed WLTP). Charging time is about 2 hours on a 7.4 kW terminal.
As we announced in September 2021, DS is adding a new spicy PHEV variant to the catalog, in addition to the 225 and 300 hp versions. Called the E-Tense 4 × 4 360, it uses the 360 hp plug-in hybrid block of the Peugeot 508 PSE and DS 9. Reviewed by DS Performance for the chassis part, this version receives widened track 24 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear, lowered chassis 15 mm, front brakes at 380 mm of diameter placed on specific 21-inch wheels reminiscent of an Audi TT RS.
Prices and marketing
Still made in France, in the Mulhouse factory, the DS 7 will be available to order during the summer. The first deliveries will be made from September 2022, the official date of arrival of the model in the DS Stores. Prices, still unknown, should be slightly higher than the 40,500 euros needed so far at the entry level.
