Reduced to its simplest expression at the beginning of the year due to scarcity, the range of the Volkswagen ID.3 again expands from above. Should we prefer it to the more expensive Renault Mégane?
Life is tough for the Volkswagen ID.3. Beset by the shortage of semiconductors, the German manufacturer has decided to reduce the range of its compact zero emissions to a minimum. Objective: To limit the number of configurations to facilitate production and ensure that the model is delivered within acceptable timeframes. In fact, since February, it was only available with its unique 204 hp (150 kW) engine, 58 kWh intermediate battery and a unique finish called Active richly equipped and shown at a correct price without more: €44,990, without bonus of €. 6,000. It was, we get along, because the range is expanding again. The Pro S Active model really enriches the small ID.3 family. Direct competitor to the most exclusive version of the new Renault Mégane E-Tech 100% electric, does it have on paper what to worry about its Diamond rival?
Power or autonomy, the choice is yours
Despite its premium status, don’t expect more power from this ID.3 Pro S Active than the Pro Performance Active run. For power lovers, you will have to wait for the ID.3 GTX which should be around 300 HP. However, the rear-mounted electric motor delivers a pretty decent 204bhp. What you will see coming and it is enough to perform the exercise from 0 to 100 km/h in just under 8 s. With its extra 16bhp, the more expensive Mégane does slightly better in this exercise: 7.4s. But this is one of the only arguments of the French. Because, not much cheaper (€750 less, neither can by the way claim the super bonus of €6,000 and in fact settle for €2,000), its small battery of only 60 kWh makes it immediately less attractive than the 77 kWh of the German one. According to the manufacturers’ figures, its range in the combined cycle would be 100 km less on average, or even a little more depending on the version and the equipment you choose. And since the DC fast charging power is roughly equivalent (5 kW difference, in favor of the ID.3), it’s not at this point that we can decide between them. Like what, Volkswagen doesn’t necessarily rhyme with high prices.
A look at the equipment, however, shows that the advantage is French, but only slightly: 20 “Landes against 19” for the ID.3, leather upholstery against mixed velvet-leather, function of massage for the front seats. Not necessarily enough to tip the scales in his favor. After that, it’s a matter of taste: some will prefer the SUV look of the Mégane to the minivan look, which goes a bit against the VW trend but guarantees better space on board. Not sure if this new version will help recover the ID.3, whose sales have fallen by 44% in Europe since the beginning of the year, and even more than half (-59.8%, 1007 copies) in our territory. . To give you an idea, a sedan like the Citroën C5 X or a large SUV like the Mercedes GLE sold more in the same period: 1,102 the first, 1,098 the second.
