features to make the Tesla Model 3 pale?

The characteristics of Hyundai’s new large electric sedan, the Ioniq 6, are now known. Does its main competitor, the Tesla Model 3, have anything to worry about on paper?

If Hyundai unveiled the first official images of its new electric sedan Ioniq 6 in late June, we still did not know its features. Yes, but that was before as they are now known. Should the Tesla Model 3, best-seller in the segment and benchmark for demolition, be chickweed? Answer!

Very, very long Ioniq 6

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 had already surprised us with its size, well, next to the Ioniq 6, it can (almost) go through a compact car. Judge instead: with 4.86 m long, the newcomer is 20 cm longer! And yet 17 cm more than the Tesla Model 3 which is not really a small vehicle either. In fact, in size, the Ioniq 6 is a little closer to its older sister, the Model S, which is 11 cm longer. However, with its very aerodynamic body (0.21 Cd) and its very sunken roof line, it is not certain that the interior space is as generous as in the latter. No living space values have been shared (legroom, trunk volume), our own measurements will allow us to attest to this, but the livable ratings of the Ioniq 6 are expected to approach more to those of the Model 3. At most we know that the distance between axles is colossal (2.95 m) and closer to that of the Model S (1 cm more) than to that of the Model 3 (2.88 m). Finally, the Ioniq 6 is also slightly wider than its Californian rival (1.88 m vs. 1.85 m for the Model 3) and slightly taller (1.50 m vs. 1.44 m).

Autonomy superior to Model 3 on paper

The Ioniq 6 will give you the choice between two battery sizes: 53 kWh or 77.4 kWh, such as the Ioniq 5 recently. If not given as an indication of autonomy for the 53 kWh model, Hyundai specifies that, equipped with 18 “wheels, its consumption should fall below 14 kWh / 100 km in the WLTP cycle, a rather low figure. As for the 77.4 kWh variant, it could drive the equivalent of 610 km with a single load in rear-wheel drive configuration and 18 “wheels, knowing that it also exists in all-wheel drive and that the tires can measure up to ‘a’ 20 “. This is slightly more than the Model 3 Grande Autonomie, given by 602 km in the WLTP cycle. At the same time, the battery can store more energy, 2.4 kWh more according to our estimates (Tesla does not share the official values). In return, the American is much, much more powerful: about 460 hp when the Ioniq 6 does not exceed 325 hp. But beware, a sporty version with the N insignia is surely in the starting blocks and should be inspired by the RN22e concept presented today. Both will be fast to recharge, Tesla’s experience is no longer to be proven from this point of view, Hyundai announced for its part that the Ioniq 6 can withstand 400V and 800V loads. In short, the fight promises to be close between the two!
